Thank You, Teacher

 Blogtober post 3:

Now di3r it’s like nearly every day we’re celebrating something.

Today, too, is World Teachers’ Day. Also known as International Teachers’ Day, it was established in 1994 by UNESCO and has been celebrated since. Teachers' Day aims to focus on "appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world" and to provide an opportunity to consider issues related to teachers and teaching (got this line from Wikipedia). It’s also a day to generally appreciate the people who are responsible for our education.

Everyone has some good old memories from our days in school, more importantly about a teacher or two. Be it their style of teaching, their dressing, their fashion sense... and oh, their errors in language which we never forget. We must also have some fond memories of teachers that were special to us because of some unique trait of theirs and such stories will always stay with us. There are also those that we disliked with skill, even to this day because of some punishment meted out to us. How many people are on this table?

You know, who we are today is directly as a result of our upbringing. What we hold as our values and principles are so because we were taught to either accept or shun particular things. Our teachers (have) play(ed) a vital role; from crèche, kindergarten through primary, junior high, senior high and on to tertiary. And looking back, I’ll bet that we can say that the “you’ll thank me one day” cliché they gave to us was not entirely false.

While today is about our formal teachers, I’d also like for us to acknowledge everyone who at one point or another taught us something. Your elder brother who taught you to make your own bed. Your sister who taught you to wash. Your friend who showed you how to play “chaskele”. Your senior who helped you out with that topic you were struggling with. Our brothers and sisters in Christ who are teaching us by word and deed to follow their example. Not forgetting our parents and other relatives, especially for the values instilled in us. We are all teachers oo. At every point you’re either learning or teaching.

Recently, my class six teacher from Achimota School, Mr Ahmed, reached out to me on Facebook and I was so happy to have heard from him! Happy that (although I’m not all that yet), I’m someone he remembered and is proud to say he taught. I hope our teachers feel that way about all of us. Because for those who do it for the love of it, their reward is in seeing us succeed.

So today, I encourage you to pick up your phone, call or send a message to that person (if you’re still in touch), telling them how much you appreciate whatever they taught you.

To all teachers, wherever you are, ayekoo! We know that our system does not give you all you deserve, but we appreciate you for all the sacrifices. Happy Teachers’ day to you all!
