Your Life, Your Responsiblity

Image
Well, hello there! It has been a while. Please share your thoughts below.   Did you know that today, September 26, 2019 is World Contraception Day? You don’t believe me, Google it. I’m sure you will but let me give you a little background right here. The World Contraception Day was launched in 2007 to ‘improve awareness of contraception and to enable young people to make informed choices on their sexual and reproductive health’ (your-life.com). Celebrated on September 26 every year since, the campaign is concentrated on achieving a world where every pregnancy occurrence is deliberate or planned and therefore wanted. This year’s theme is “ It’s your life, it’s your responsibility”. Contraception and Contraceptives Now let’s go back to the basics: what is contraception and contraceptives? The offline English dictionary defines contraception as ‘the use of a device or procedure to prevent conception as a result of sexual activity’. Palpably, contraceptives are those

A Pre-burial Tribute A week from today, you'd have finally been laid to rest. It's been nearly two months, and as I witness a funeral, I can't help but imagine yours. I'm realising how annoying funerals can be... While some mourn, it's a social gathering for others. Any When I think of you, I remember support... you were at my first fashion show, ever at Legon. Even though it was a student thing, you understood how important it was for me and you came, even before the show started and you waited to see me walk the runway. And when I went out and didn't come back early, you wouldn't stop calling me! I found it annoying🤦 but you said you couldn't sleep if I wasn't home.. except for that one time you locked me out 😂 June 3rd 2015 I did not spend the night at home. I won't recount the reaction when you eventually saw me, suffice to say that, you were a mother. As the first child, I like to think that my childhood was the best, and y

Surreptitious Killer - 5

5. When Women's Fellowship meeting just ended. Auntie Akua: Oh sisters, have you heard about what Sister Betty is going through right now? She's battling leukemia, it's the reason she was on admission a while back and why she's not been coming to church of late. Auntie Yaa: Ow! (Covering her mouth) Auntie Mercy: Oh that's sad... Auntie Akua: Yes oh. She's coming through chemo right now and you should see her. All her hair is off. She's really reduced in weight. Auntie Rose: Hmm. Why do bad stuff always happen to good people? Auntie Akua: Hmm. Please let's remember her in our prayers. The next day, Pastor goes to visit sister Betty... Betty: Pastor, thanks for stopping by. Pastor: Oh, don't mention. (Pauses.) How are you doing? Betty: By God's grace, we're alive. We can't complain. Pastor: Indeed. We give glory to God. (Another pause)The other day I overheard Akua telling three others that you had cancer.  Betty: What? (In surp

4. Youth picnic Nudges friend. Friend gives a look that says 'what?' Uses her eyes to point in direction of couple holding their drinks and laughing. 'Frank and what seems to be his new girl.' 'Mm-hm.' Smirks. 'Is she even from our church?' 'Nope, I don't think so. Never seen her there.' 'He got over Vivian very quickly, didn't he?' 'Since she appears to still be single, I'll say yes.' 'Insensitive prick. Did he even consider what it might do to Vivian to see him with someone new?' 'Hey, easy, tiger. First off, they never explicitly told anyone that they were an item.' 'But the signs were there and we aren't stupid.' 'Second, they didn't announce to anyone that they 'broke up.' 'Also very obvious and you know it. And now he's with someone new. What the hell are we supposed to think? That that's his cousin?' 'Could be, you know.' '

No Longer Mine - A Poem

Image
This face is no longer mine With eyes so expressive shadowed with brows so thick How I loved to run my fingers through hair so black and shiny, lips I never stopped admiring This laugh is no longer mine The shift of the Adam's apple as loud baritone eased out The best I ever heard, I can never help but break into a smile, every time These hands are no longer mine To scribble nothings in the palm and fix my fingers in between So cozy, it felt like home, large enough to envelope in safety with nails so pretty, I almost was jealous This body is no longer mine To have and to hold... To lay my head on, whichever Hear the heart beat, whenever Snuggle into, wherever And slide my hands, all over This heart is no longer mine, This heart that used to beat for me, loving so fiercely, so freely I know not of its present fears,  it's dreams, it's struggles The good memories, I will hold so close The wrongs, I would wish away And as we go our separate ways At t

To Thine Own Self Be True

"This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man." - Hamlet, Shakespeare If you found out you had only 30 days to live, what are things you’d want to do with your time and yourself before you die? You can share your top ten with me. I just want to know, if you haven’t done or aren’t doing any of them yet, what is it that you’re waiting for? It is often said that ‘he who fails to plan, plans to fail’. With every new year comes resolutions we make to guide us into becoming better versions of ourselves, usually with fervour. While some of us are able to see at least some or all through to the end of the year, for some of us the resolutions fall by the wayside with apathy that equals the zeal with which is started. Maybe situations caused our objectives to change. Maybe the goals we set were too big for us in the interim. Maybe we up and decided that no, we just don’t want to do that anymore. Whi
