Freeing the Boobies: Re-examining Why

Image
Blogtober post 10 (and my 50th post, yayyyy!) By now you know that October is breast cancer awareness month. Not one day, not one week but a whole month-all 31 days of it have been dedicated to breast cancer, that should tell you how much of a problem it is.  According to cancer.org , breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women (only lung cancer kills more women each year). The chance that a woman will die from breast cancer is about 1 in 38 (about 2.6%).  But thankfully, early detection saves lives. This is why the month has been set aside to encourage women to know their bodies, particularly their boobies. Regularly examining one’s boobs would make any slight change easy to detect; be it a growing lump, a discharge from the nipple, change in shape or even an unusual pain. The earlier it’s detected and reported, the higher our chances are of getting treated so we don't succumb to it.  Risk factors of breast cancer include being female, family history of br

Today I'm sharing a poem I wrote. It's nothing deep. But I hope you like it, and let me know in the comments what you make of it. I never came up with a good enough title, so let's just make do with this. Blogtober post 9: I have always wanted more More.  Always more I had truly wanted you to be enough But for me, you never were enough I tried to be satisfied, I tried to be real I tried so hard, it almost was a skill You were so good, the best I'd ever met I just had to have you, I couldn't let you slip But wait... Is that how it should be? They speak of this feeling that can't be expressed They say it gives you shivers and butterflies in your belly They speak of looks that heat you up and bodily contact that makes you burn And they say it never goes away... They say it's mutual, and you both just know it They speak of imperfections that you decide to assume responsibility for, because of the person that you want The also say that is patient and is kind And

October 10th each year is Mental Awareness Day. This is a day late, but better late than never, right?  Blogtober post 8: The theme for this year’s Mental Health Day celebration is ‘mental health for all’, especially considering the effect of covid-19. It’s taken a toll on nearly every one as we’ve all experienced its impact in one way or another. Economically, socially, psychologically, emotionally etc. Source:icn.ch The frontline health workers may be the most impacted, seeing the transformation in patients; rejoicing in recoveries, mourning the losses and still having to carry on. Thankfully, our country saw way more recoveries than deaths. So, mental health. Mental health is more than just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities.  Stress, depression, panic, phobias, anxiety, just to name a few. According to WHO, Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work producti

Do I Really Know You?

Blogtober Post 7: Okay, so funny scenario. Actually no, this isn’t funny. Fine, you tell me by the time you’re done. So say you have a friend, really good friend of the opposite sex. You’ve been friends for years. And as normal friendships go, you fight from time to time, have a falling out or two, but you know by now that you’re going to be friends for life. Now, you met outside of your usual circle, so as far as you know, you have no mutual friends. You talk about your families and other friends, but you haven’t actually met them. It’s not like you’re keeping your friendship a secret; you’re not even really sure why. This is someone you talk to nearly every day, and you meet up with    from time to time. So one weekend you call and there’s no answer. That’s not the problem, but your friend doesn’t call back after a couple hours, which is unusual. Throughout the day, you call again, and again, and again, and yet again; still no answer and no call back. By night fall, different

No, today isn't World Blood Donor day; that's June 14th. It's blogtober, so anything goes. I first wrote this for a competition while in school. Obviously it's been updated as that was years ago (2016 to be exact). Blood donation is always relevant; people will always need an extra pint or two, so here goes.  Blogtober post 6: I learned about blood donation from my Mum; she was a donor until surgery stopped her. Back in the day, I remember Pepsi used to organize these blood donation exercises where she’d go donate, and she’d take me along. When I was old enough to understand what it was, I was intrigued by the whole process of laying down, getting a needle stuck into your arm so your blood will be drawn out, and I could not wait till I was old enough to donate. I definitely did not factor in the pain bit, though. Source: istockphoto.com That was how it started for me. My first attempt to donate blood was when I was sixteen and in secondary school. I got ‘bounced’ be

Attraction: Is it Enough?

Blogtober post  5: What is the first thing you notice about a person when you first meet them? What is the first thing that attracts you to a person? Their body stature? Their height? The guys, boobs or booty? My ladies, six pack anaa? For me, the basic thing that I look out for that attracts me to a person even before I get to really know them is their eloquence. I mean, if they’re easy on the eyes, that’s a plus too. But for me, the brofo is very necessary for any further engagement. Please I'm just kidding. Source: ca.askmen.com Attraction is a quality that sparks an interest/desire in, or gravitation towards a person or a thing(Wikipedia came through again). Attraction can be platonic, physical or sensual, emotional, sexual or romantic, even intellectually. You can be attracted to a person in combination of ways. And they don't always go hand in hand. For example, you can be attracted to a person so they can be your friend(platonic). You can be attracted to a person emoti

Blogtober post 4: Fun Fact : Did you know that in Giza, Egypt there’s a city named 6 th of October? There’s also an elevated highway in Cairo named the 6 th October Bridge. These were named after a war which broke out between the Israelis and allied Egypt and Syria in 1973. The Yom-Kippur War aka Ramadan War aka October War aka Arab-Israeli War was fought from 6 th to 25 th October. Yom Kippur is a widely observed day of rest, fasting, and prayer in Judaism, which in 1973 also occurred during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. What was the cause of the war? This is where the history lesson ends. I beg, go and find out if you’re interested. This was just by the way; I was only asking if you knew. Okay, now to the matter. Today I want to share a poem that I wrote somewhere last year. Some of you may have seen it, but largely, it’s unseen.  I mentioned in my first Blogtober post  that I'll be posting some poems and mini-poems, and that I'll give a bit of background when
